Super 32 Recap
MAIN
With Super 32 concluding this past weekend, here is a recap of Indiana's performance at this premier event. Between four age divisions; HS boys, HS girls, MS, and 11U- Indiana walked away with 14 placers, 4 finalists, and a champion.
On the high school boys' side, five wrestlers made the semifinals. Westfield's Connor Maddox had three tech-falls, a fall, and a decision on his way to the semis before losing to the eventual champ. He would end up settling for 6th place at 113. Up at 126, Brownsburg's Case Bell went 5-2 and ended up placing 5th, with both losses coming in ultimate tiebreakers. Evansville Mater Dei made it to the quarters at 138 before being stopped by the eventual champ. Schaefer has clearly jumped levels, evident in his results, with his Only losses coming by decision to two guys ranked 2nd in the country at their respective weights. Schaefer would end up placing 5th as well. Delta's Jensen Boyd and Brownsburg's Braylon Reynolds finished 3rd and 4th respectively at 144, with Boyd winning their 3rd-place match 11-6. Both made the semifinals on their respective sides before dropping two heartbreakers late. Boyd's only loss also came to the champion; Reynolds lost to the runner-up, then to Boyd. We did have two guys make the finals here: Center Grove's Peyton Hornsby made the 150-pound final, and New Prairie's Matthew Staples made the 165-pound one. Hornsby was dominant all tournament, picking up five bonus-point wins on his way to the semis. Unfortunately, an overtime takedown ended his run at a title, and he had to settle for 2nd place. Staples had a similar tournament, securing four bonus-point wins before getting an overtime takedown to reach the finals. In the finals, Staples wrestled the best kid in the gym, regardless of weight, and while it didn't go his way, I was impressed with him in this match.
On the girls' side, there was only one placer, Crown Point's Ava Strayer. Strayer dropped her opening match before rattling off four straight wins to make the placement matches. She did drop her last two and settled for 8th place. Strayer did pick up a win over a nationally ranked girl from New York in the blood round.
In the middle school division, we had five placewinners and our lone champion. At 100 pounds, Center Grove's Colten Wiseman went 5-2 on his way to a 5th-place finish. Another future Trojan finished 5th as well, with Jon Luke Austin taking 5th place after dropping his opening match. Austin went on to win five straight matches, including a 1-0 decision and a sudden-victory win in the blood round, to reach All-American status. Avon's Kayden Hughs took 4th up at 157. Hughes made the semifinals before ultimately losing to the champ. He rebounded by picking up a win over a fellow Indiana native, New Prairie's Holden Ripley, before dropping his 3rd-place match. Ripley was an All-American this weekend as well, finishing 6th. Mishawaka's D'Angelo Chavez won his weight class this weekend to bring home Indiana's only title. Chavez was dominant, going 5-0 with three bonus-point wins, including a 16-0 tech-fall in the finals.
Delta's Leyton Boyd joined his brother in bringing home some hardware after a runner-up finish at 65 pounds. Boy went 3-1 on the weekend with one fall.
Congratulations to our 14 placers.
