2022 IHSAA State 132-160 Preview

February 17, 2022

132

This is a super talented weight at the top, but with Zeke Seltzer(Cathedral) at the weight the field has little chance to win a title. Seltzer is looking to cap off what has already been a remarkable career. Last year Brady Ison(Brownsburg) won the semi-state and ended up on the same side as Selzer. This time he is on the opposite side and should make the finals here. While I do not see him beating Ison, Elijah Anthony(Frankfort) is probably the 4th or 5th best kid in the weight and has pushed Ison in their previous match. Cheaney Schoeff(Avon) has made the finals the last two seasons, but that streak will be coming to an end this weekend with him likely seeing Seltzer.Schoeff should have no problem coming back for 3rd though. Bryce Denton(Penn) was a state qualifier last year at 113 and now all the way up at 132. He will see Logan Uhlman(Adams Central), who was also a qualifier last year, on Friday night. Uhlman did not start out the hottest this season but has come on strong since the postseason started. Landon Bertsch(Bluffton) comes in looking to build on his 6th place finish last year.  He has a tough Zar Walker(Mishawaka) to get past Friday night, but I have him winning here and seeing Seltzer Saturday morning. On the bottom side, Anthony Bahl(Crown Point) should make the semis before dropping a match to Ison. The match that I could see going either way Friday is between Wyatt Krejsa(Center Grove) and Brevan Thrine(New Castle). Thrine is big for the weight and a great athlete, while Kresja is up a few weights. Regardless, looking at their body of work from this year, I have to go with Krejsa here.

Jesse Mendez(Crown Point) looks to cap off one of the best careers in Indiana wrestling history this weekend. No one is unbeatable but Mendez is probably as close as you can get. I look for him to score bonus points on everyone he wrestles this weekend, and put a stamp on his legacy. Battling for a shot to see Mendez in the finals, we will have a matchup between the #2 and #3 kids in the state. Cole Solomey(Kankakee Valley) and Bryce Lowery(Roncalli) will meet Saturday morning with the winner being the favorite to make the finals. My pick to make the finals however is Ashton Hayhurst(Castle). Hayhurst should have little issue making it into the semi-finals, probably seeing Cameron Clark(Jay County) there. Clark is tough to score on and makes matches close, giving him a shot to beat anyone, but Hayhurst should take this one. His semi-finals opponent will be either Solomey or Lowery, who I feel will be a lot more worn down from their path to the semis than Hayhurst. Someone who may be the second best kid in the weight, Gavin Garcia(Brownsburg). Garcia has the misfortune of having Mendez in the semis, effectively ending his run. Some matches to keep an eye on Friday night are Luke Gonzalez(Cathedral) and Dillon Tuttle(Delta). Tuttle took 4th at the regional and then made the semi-state finals a week ago. While Gonzalez is not super technical, he is tough and will wrestle you the whole 6 min. Another one I will be sure to check out is the one between Ike O’Neill(Westfield) and Julius Gerencser(Daleville). Gerencser is a returning state placer, so he has been here before and knows how to get it done on Friday. Regardless, O’Neill looked unreal on Saturday and I see him on the podium.

This is another weight where the two best guys are on the same side of the bracket. Matthew Koontz(Perry Meridian) is the man to beat here at this weight. He comes in unbeaten, with a win over the second-ranked Hayden Watson(Center Grove). While their first match was a 5-4 decision, the match was not as close as the score indicated. Koontz should roll into the semis, while Watson will have a tough one against Brody Arthur(Oak Hill) in the quarters. Watson is the favorite here but Arthur is funky and has put good guys away. On the bottom half of the bracket you have Aidan Torres(Chesterton) who comes in with one loss, against Watson. He is my pick to make it out on the other side. Torres will have a tough on eSaturday morning against Brac Hooper(Carmel). Hooper can absolutely win this match and it would not be that shocking if he did honestly. Torres’s potential semi-finals opponent will likely be Toby Abbott(Cowan). Abbott handed Authur his first loss of the year last weekend. Before we talk about Abbott making it there though he will see Rider Searcy(East Central). I am just going to say that styles make fights and Abbott is a leech on top and Searcy is dangerous from everywhere, including on bottom. I can see Searcy putting him to his back in something crazy and stealing this match here. The biggest match happening Friday at this weight is between Arthur and Nick Tattini(Crown Point). Tattini has had a great year but has the misfortune of seeing Arthur on Friday. Another one to watch is at the bottom of the bracket between Brac Hooper(Carmel) and Blaze Garcia(Brownsburg). Both Hooper and Garcia have been here multiple times, but neither have been able to secure a medal, yet.

Outside of Sam Goin(Crown Point), this weight class is really a crap shoot. Tyler Jones(Warren Central) got second at the semi-state and put himself in a great spot to make a run here. He will likely see Mitchell Betz(Western) Saturday morning, who still sports a perfect record. Jones has wrestled much tougher competition this season, which is why I am taking him to be more prepared here. He has also wrestled on Saturday morning the last two years so he is used to being here. From there he will see the winner of Delaney Ruhlman(Bloomington South) and Anthony RInehart(Zionsville). Rinehart won the first go around, 3-2 at the Al Smith, but it was within the margins for Ruhlman to get his revenge. I am not picking it though after seeing Rinehart last weekend. Hunter May(Evansville Mater Dei) finished 4th a year ago but he will have to be on his “A game” this weekend if he wants to have any chance to make it back. Friday night he has a tough one against Alex Currie(Adams Central) on Friday. If he wins that one he will see a Kody Glithero(Roncalli) who has been on fire this postseason and is looking to win it here. I can not see taking this one here. Chase Leech(Garrett) was a state qualifier a year ago and looks to improve and get himself a medal this year. Leech will see a tough Nick Cicciarelli(Brownsburg) Friday Night and I have a hard time seeing Leech get past him.

This weight will be amazing this weekend. There is a lot of parity in this weight class among the top 4 or 5 guys. JJ Conway(Floyd Central) comes back to defend his title from a year ago. On his side he has Cody Goodwin(Crown Point), who has been great the last 2 seasons and looks to get his first state medal. I am picking Goodwin to make his first final here and win his first title as well. He will have a tough Chris Newman(Mt. Vernon (Posey)) on Friday. If you have not seen Newman, he is a monster of 160, which is not great if you are having to hold weight. At the top of the bracket, Kade Law(Columbus East) is my favorite to make it through from the top side. Law has only lost to Conway this year, same thing with his likely semis opponent, Landon Boe(Avon). I am taking Law in this one but Boe could definitely take this one. This weight has a lot of good Friday night matches. The first, and my first 4-over-1 pick, is between Charlie Euson(East Central) and Kaden Lone(NorthWood). They have one common opponent, Chase Wagner(Zionsville) and Lone killed Wagner while Euson had a more competitive match with him. The next one is between Logan Farnell(Maconaquah) and Zach Huckaby(Perry Meridian). Do not let the records fool you, Huckaby can definitely win this match. Farnell is a weird matchup who I have had people describe to me as “dangerously sloppy”. The last super competitive matchup is between coaches kids’, Duke Myers(Bellmont) and Wagner. Wagner is a “goer” and will push you for 6 min. I am just not sure he is as good as Myers, who will also have some size in him, which is why I am taking Myers here.

Ranked Wrestlers (12/16):

#1 JJ Conway, 33-0, Floyd Central, 12

#2 Kade Law, 38-2, Columbus East, 12
